Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja mourned the death of his close friend’s wife, Ashwell Prince’s wife, Melissa Prince, who died on 3rd January after battling with cancer. Khawaja added a dark armband on the first day of the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy that was held at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Khawaja’s gesture was a true gesture of camaraderie between him and Prince, with whom he has been good friends since they joined the Lancashire County side in 2014. The two were fundamental in the promotion of Lancashire into Division One that season.
Khawaja was the only player from the Australian team who wore the black armband, making his gesture even more symbolic. Melissa Prince was aged only 40 years when she was dragged down by cancer, which made her leave behind her husband Ashwell and the family. It was kind of Khawaja to accept the bat, kind of classy to pay tribute to his friend’s dead wife, but most of all, very symbolic of the friendship this cricketing world shares beyond the field.

Jasprit Bumrah picked up a wicket on the last ball of the first day, reducing Australia to 9/1 at Stumps in Sydney. The hosts at one point are 176 runs behind India’s total of 185, and they have a very Herculean task ahead of them to try and get back in the picture.
Bumrah’s last over made it worse for Australia and thereby set the stage for an exciting second day of cricket. Indian bowlers will be expecting to make further inroads; on the other hand, It will be an Australian side hoping to pull themselves out of the deeper waters.
