Australia thrashed Pakistan by 360 runs on the fourth day of the first Test match played at Optus Stadium, Perth on 17th December 2023. It was a dominating performance by the Australian team right from the word go as they posted 487 runs in the first innings before bowling out Pakistan for 271 runs.
Nathan Lyon got his 500th Test wicket by dismissing Faheem Ashraf. The umpire gave not out but on review, it was overturned to out in front of a decent crowd at Optus Stadium, Perth. He then got rid of Aamer Jamal with easy stumping by Alex Carey. It was a superb bowling effort by Lyon as he ended with figures of 2 for 14 in 8 overs. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood grabbed 3 wickets while Pat Cummins took 1 wicket.
Lyon had a good performance in the first innings picking 3 wickets for 66 runs in 24 overs. He got the breakthrough for Australia dismissing Abdullah Shafique with a lovely catch by Warner at leg slip. The off-spinner then grabbed the wicket of Imam UL Haq on the 3rd day and then dismissed Aamer Jamal as Alex Carey did a superb stumping.
It was a dominating performance by the Australian team with some lovely performances. Nathan Lyon grabbed a total of 5 wickets in the entire match and achieved the milestone of 500 Test wickets.
Nathan Lyon’s performances in Test matches
Nathan Lyon has been a consistent performer in Test matches. He made his Test debut against Sri Lanka at Galle International Stadium, Galle on 31st August 2011. Lyon picked a wicket on his first ball getting the wicket of Kumar Sangakkara.
He has played 123 Test matches (230 innings) and picked a total of 501 wickets with the best figures of 8 for 50 against India. Lyon has shown tremendous success against every opponent. His ability to trouble the opponents with his variations makes him a tough bowler to face.
Lyon will be looking to continue his superb performance in the 2nd Test match to be played at Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG from 26th December 2023.
