AUS vs WI: Mitchell Marsh Tested Positive For COVID-19 Before The First T20I

Australia’s ongoing wave of COVID cases has seen another individual affected their T20I captain, Mitchell Marsh. The all-rounder tested positive just a day prior to the beginning of the T20I series against the West Indies on home turf.

Similar to his fellow team members who experienced the infection, Marsh has received approval to participate despite testing positive. He must adhere to social distancing measures from other players on the field and utilize a separate dressing room.

“Australia T20 skipper Mitch Marsh has tested positive to Covid-19 but will still play in tomorrow’s first T20 against the Windies in Hobart, in line with CA protocols. Marsh will use a separate dressing room during the match and stay distanced while on the field,” Cricket Australia released a statement.

Travis Head, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Moises Henriques, and even head coach Andrew McDonald have all experienced the virus during the Australian summer, yet it hasn’t affected their positions in the team.

In the case of Green, who tested positive before the second Test against the West Indies at the Gabba, he had to maintain distance during the national anthems and celebrate from afar to prevent close contact and the potential spread of the virus.

Marsh has assumed the role of the T20I team’s de facto captain, leading the side after Aaron Finch’s retirement. The all-rounder captained the team during the away series in South Africa and has been assigned the captaincy duties for the upcoming T20I series against West Indies and New Zealand.

The initial T20I encounter between Australia and the West Indies is set for Friday, February 9, at Hobart’s Blundstone Arena. Australia secured a decisive 3-0 series victory in the ODIs, winning the last match by a convincing 10-wicket margin.

Mitchell Marsh was recently honoured with the esteemed Allan Border Medal

Cricket Australia recognized the all-rounder’s recent success by awarding him the prestigious Allan Border Medal in the ceremony held on January 31.

His significant contributions to the white-ball squad and impressive comeback in the 2023 Ashes have solidified his role. Currently, he is poised to lead the Men in Yellow in the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup, which will be held in the Caribbean and the United States of America (USA).
