The West Indies women’s Cricket Team pulled off a successful highest run chase against Australia in the 2nd T20I match played at North Sydney Oval, Sydney on 2nd October 2023. It was West Indies’ first ever over Australia since the 2016 World T20 finals victory played in India.
Chasing down 213 runs to win, the West Indies women’s team lost an early wicket off Shakiba Gajanbi. Hayley Mathews showed her class with some lovely shots putting pressure on the Australian bowling right from the word. She looked in sublime touch hitting boundaries at will. At the end of the first six overs, West Indies women scored 44 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Mathews and Stephanie Taylor kept the momentum going for West Indies hitting boundaries with ease. West Indies captain Mathews continued her superb form with fifty off 26 deliveries. She hit the gaps brilliantly and made the batting look at ease on a brilliant batting pitch. Mathews was given a reprieve thrice with dropped catches. Mathews and Taylor kept ticking the scoreboard making life tough for Australian bowlers. Stephanie Taylor reached fifty off 35 deliveries that kept West Indies women on course.
Megan Schutt eventually struck getting rid of Taylor trying to hit a big shot. Taylor and Mathews put on 174 runs for the 2nd wicket. Mathews continued her merry way to her 2nd T20I century off 53 deliveries. After her milestone, she hit attacking strokes and was eventually dismissed for 132 with 20 fours and 5 sixes. Henry and Campbelle ensured that West Indies chased down the target winning the match by 7 wickets with 1 ball to spare. For her 3 for 36 and 132 off 64 deliveries, Hayley Mathews was named the Player of the Match award.
After being asked to bat first, the Australian women got off to the worst start losing wickets of Healy and Tahila McGrath. Ellyse Perry’s 70, Phoebe Litchfield’s quick-half century, and Wareham’s 32 off 13 balls helped Australian women post 212 for 6 in 20 overs. Mathews took 3 for 36 in her 4 overs.
