Head coach Andrew McDonald has indicated that top Australian players who are participating in the Indian Premier League finals will not be participating in the T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up matches.
According to McDonald, who spoke with cricket.com.au, players like Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, and Mitchell Starc will be added to the roster shortly before the side’s June 5 tournament opener against Oman.
For Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matthew Short have earned last-minute tickets to the Caribbean, but Tanveer Sangha’s chances of playing have been severely damaged by an injury setback.
Australia’s Caribbean side, the majority of which will arrive in Trinidad later this week for two warm-up matches, has announced Fraser-McGurk and Short as its travelling reserves.
McDonald talks about Australian players who are in the IPL:
The likes of Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, and Mitchell Starc will join the team shortly before the side’s June 5 tournament opener against Oman, says McDonald, who spoke with cricket.com.au. Australia’s warm-up matches are at Queens Park Oval in Port of Spain against Namibia and the West Indies. For those two games, they won’t have the whole team available to them.
“They’ll have a staggered entry now that they’ve made the finals—they’ll meet us in Barbados, and the guys who aren’t in the IPL finals, will meet us in Trinidad,” McDonald said of the Australian players who are in the IPL.
“We’re just trying to tailor the best individual preparation and bring it together as a team when we get to Barbados, then we have four or five days there leading into the first game against Oman,” he further added.
Australia’s final T20 World Cup squad: Marsh (c), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, and Adam Zampa.
