BCCI Boosts Test Cricket: Players Offered Rs 45 Lakh per Match in Rs 40 Crore Initiative

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a significant step to boost Test cricket by introducing the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’, which aims to provide financial rewards to players participating in the longest format of the game. This initiative, announced by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, seeks to offer additional incentives to players beyond the standard match fees.

Shah highlighted that this scheme, set to commence from the 2022-23 season, would provide a financial boost and stability to players engaged in Test cricket, which is considered the pinnacle of the sport. Under this scheme, players participating in Test matches will receive additional incentives based on their level of involvement in the format.

For players taking part in more than 50% of the matches, an incentive of Rs 30 lakh per match will be provided if they are in the playing eleven, and Rs 15 lakh per match if they are not included in the playing eleven. Similarly, players participating in more than 75% of the matches will receive Rs 45 lakhs per match if included in the playing eleven, and Rs 22 lakh per match if not in the playing eleven.

This move reflects BCCI’s commitment to upholding and promoting Test cricket, recognizing its significance in the cricketing landscape. It comes at a time when there is a growing concern over players prioritizing tournaments like the Indian Premier League (IPL) over Test cricket. Shah emphasized the importance of domestic cricket as the foundation of Indian cricket, emphasizing that it has always been valued and prioritized in the development of the sport.

The BCCI secretary reiterated the board’s stance that aspiring cricketers must prove themselves in domestic cricket before aiming for international recognition. He emphasized the role of domestic cricket as the feeder line to the national team, stating that performance in domestic tournaments remains a crucial criterion for selection. Non-participation in domestic cricket would have significant implications for players aspiring to represent India on the international stage.

Overall, the introduction of the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ underscores BCCI’s dedication to preserving the heritage and tradition of Test cricket, while also incentivizing players to actively participate and excel in the format. By prioritizing Test cricket and emphasizing the importance of domestic cricket, BCCI aims to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of Indian cricket at both the national and international levels.
