The Board of Control for Cricket in India has set aside a window in March 2023 for the inaugural season of the Women’s Indian Premier League. After the success of this year’s Women’s T20 Challenge, the fans and the players have been calling for the board to host the Women’s Indian Premier League. According to reports, the T20 league is set to take place in March 2023.
The BCCI had also earlier announced its intention for a six-team tournament. They have already tweaked the women’s domestic cricket schedule to fit the T20 league. The domestic season usually lasts from November to April. However, this year, the season will begin in October with the T20 Championship and will conclude in February next year with the inter-zonal one-day competition.
Since 2018 the BCCI is organizing the Women’s T20 Challenge. However, with the success of the league, and the abundance of talent in women’s cricket, it has decided to begin a full-fledged league. As reported by Espncricinfo, the BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has expressed that the process to begin the Women’s Indian Premier League is underway.
Earlier this year in February, Sourav Ganguly confirmed that the tournament will kick off next year. He said,
“We are at the level of formulation to have a full-fledged WIPL. It is certainly going to happen. I strongly believe that next year i.e. 2023 will be a very good time to start a full-fledged women’s IPL which will be as big and grand a success as men’s IPL.”
Women’s IPL can be a big turning point for us: Harmanpreet Kaur
Team India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur expressed that the Women’s Indian Premier League can be a gamechanger for the Indian team. The Indian players have been playing in overseas T20 leagues so far, and in the Women’s T20 challenge in India. Speaking to India Today, Harmanpreet Kaur said,
“I think women’s IPL can be a big turning point for us. Our players do get opportunities to play overseas leagues. I feel domestic players will get a great platform in women’s IPL. We have talented women’s cricketers in the country but many of them don’t have the experience of the big stages. Women’s IPL will be a great platform for them.”
Team India secured a silver medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games. They lost to Australia in the finals by nine runs chasing 162.
