England Receive Major Injury Boost as Ben Duckett Declared Fit for Champions Trophy

England’s Ben Duckett delivered a historic performance in the Champions Trophy, amassing a stunning 165 off 143 balls against Australia in Lahore on February 22. This landmark innings established Duckett as the first batter to score 150 or more runs in the tournament’s history, eclipsing previous records. His innings, which marked his highest score in One Day Internationals (ODIs), played a pivotal role in England’s formidable total.

A Crucial Partnership and Accelerated Scoring

Australia, having elected to field first, struck early as Phil Salt fell in the second over due to an outstanding catch by Alex Carey. Despite another setback with Jamie Smith’s dismissal, Duckett stabilized England’s innings alongside Joe Root. Their partnership of 158 runs provided the necessary momentum post-powerplay, with Duckett initially pacing himself to a 49-ball fifty before accelerating his strike rate. His adaptability against spin bowling proved instrumental in anchoring England’s innings.

Upon reaching his century in 95 deliveries—his third in ODIs and second against Australia—Duckett transitioned into an aggressive mode. His dominance over the Australian attack saw him surpass Joe Root’s previous record for the highest individual score by an English batter in the Champions Trophy. He then eclipsed Nathan Astle’s long-standing record of 145 runs, setting a new tournament benchmark.

England Surpasses the 350-Run Mark

Duckett reached the 150-run milestone in 134 balls before eventually being dismissed by Marnus Labuschagne while attempting to accelerate the scoring in the death overs. His innings included 17 boundaries and three sixes, exemplifying a blend of precision and power.

England capitalized on this foundation, with Jofra Archer’s late onslaught—featuring a six and a boundary in the final over—propelling the total beyond 350. Their eventual score of 351 placed them in a commanding position, underscoring the impact of Duckett’s masterful knock.
