England captain Ben Stokes played a determined and gritty innings on Day 2 of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide, stepping in when his team was under serious pressure. England were reeling at 71 for 4 when Stokes came to the crease at the number six position. The Australian bowlers were in control, extracting movement and bounce, making run-scoring extremely difficult.
Instead of following England’s aggressive “Bazball” approach, Stokes chose a cautious method. His focus was on staying at the crease and stopping the collapse. The pitch offered assistance to bowlers, and wickets were falling regularly at the other end. In such conditions, Stokes decided that survival was more important than scoring quickly.
A Gritty Knock That Anchored England’s Innings
Stokes went on to score 45 not out from 151 balls, an innings built on patience and resilience. While the run rate was slow, his presence provided much-needed stability. His defensive technique and mental strength allowed England to recover from a dangerous situation.
Thanks largely to his effort, England managed to reach 213 for 8 by the close of play. The knock helped extend the innings and prevented Australia from completely dominating the day. Though not visually entertaining, Stokes’ innings played a crucial role in pushing England past the 200-run mark, which could prove important later in the match.
An Unwanted Record in the Bazball Era
Despite the positive impact of the innings, Stokes also registered an unwanted record. His score of 45 became the lowest total by an England batter to face the first 150 balls of an innings in the Bazball era. This period refers to England’s aggressive Test cricket phase under head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes.
Interestingly, Stokes surpassed his own previous slowest record — a cautious fifty at the Gabba — showing how rare such innings have been in recent years. The knock highlighted England’s ability to adapt their approach when conditions demand patience rather than aggression.
While the statistics may not flatter him, the innings underlined Stokes’ leadership and commitment to the team. In a high-pressure Ashes contest, his willingness to grind it out ensured England remained competitive despite challenging circumstances.
