Ben Stokes, England’s Test captain, has signed a new central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), extending his commitment until September 2026. Reports suggest the contract covers the 2025-26 Ashes tour.

Despite being injury-prone, Stokes’ value as a player and leader is undeniable, especially given his role in revitalizing the England Test team.

His decision to delay signing a deal in hopes of negotiating better terms demonstrates his marketability, particularly in high-demand T20 leagues. Stokes remains a critical asset to England, and the ECB’s offer reflects their desire to retain him.

Stokes to Miss First Test Against Pakistan

Unfortunately, Stokes will miss the first Test of England’s upcoming series against Pakistan due to a hamstring injury sustained in August. The match will be played at the Multan Cricket Stadium, and Ollie Pope will captain the team in Stokes’ absence.

Chris Woakes will make his first overseas Test appearance in over two years. Stokes had led England to a 3-0 victory in their previous tour of Pakistan, creating expectations for Pope to maintain that momentum. The pressure is on Pope to deliver the same level of leadership and match-changing tactics that Stokes is known for.

Confidence in England’s Bowling Attack

Ahead of the first Test, Stokes expressed full confidence in England’s bowling unit. He emphasized that the chosen bowlers would benefit from the challenging experience, which would test their resilience in Test cricket.

Stokes, along with head coach Brendon McCullum, will support Pope in his captaincy role, encouraging him to influence the game and take bold decisions. Stokes is expected to return for the second Test, which will be held in Rawalpindi, adding strength to the team as they aim to continue their winning form.
