At just 16 years old, Bipin Sharma became the breakout star of the inaugural Nepal Premier League (NPL), showcasing his potential as one of Nepal’s most promising cricketers. Representing Karnali Yaks, Bipin ended the tournament as his team’s leading wicket-taker with 13 wickets in eight matches. His left-arm spin left an indelible mark, with his scalps including international stars like Martin Guptill and James Neesham.
Bipin’s journey to the NPL was a dream come true. Selected through a talent hunt in his hometown of Surkhet, the young spinner was overjoyed when the Karnali Yaks management visited his home to announce his selection, capturing the moment on camera. It was a proud moment for both Bipin and his family. His primary goal for the NPL was to gain as much experience as possible by learning from both domestic and international players.
Despite initial nerves, Bipin’s confidence grew during his first practice session with Karnali Yaks. Bowling to West Indian international Chadwick Walton and taking his wicket in training boosted his self-belief. Walton, who played a mentoring role for Bipin throughout the tournament, had a significant impact on the youngster’s development.
Bipin made his NPL debut against Kathmandu Gurkhas, claiming the wicket of Michael Levitt. His breakthrough performance came in the next match against Chitwan Rhinos, where his remarkable figures of 3/21 earned him the Player of the Match award. His knack for dismissing high-profile players earned him the nickname “Big Fish” among his teammates.
A memorable moment from the tournament came before Karnali Yaksmatch against Janakpur Bolts. At an NPL event, Bipin told James Neesham he would take his wicket, to which Neesham replied, “Fantastic.” True to his word, Bipin clean-bowled the Kiwi all-rounder the following day, although Karnali Yaks ultimately lost the match.
Throughout the tournament, Bipin benefited from the guidance of senior left-arm spinner Bhuwan Karki, who was also his roommate. Sharing the field with Indian legend Shikhar Dhawan was another highlight for the young cricketer.
Bipin’s cricketing journey began as a medium pacer, but a suggestion from his academy coach led him to focus on left-arm spin. His hard work and discipline were evident from his consistent attendance at training, even during festivals. His brother played a crucial role in convincing their parents to support Bipin’s cricketing dreams.
Bipin aspires to represent Nepal at the international level and serve the national team for years to come. His rise from a talent hunt to becoming the leading wicket-taker for Karnali Yaks has inspired countless young cricketers in Nepal. His story not only highlights the opportunities provided by the Nepal Premier League but also paves the way for future talents to follow in his footsteps.
