On the opening day of the second Test between New Zealand national cricket team and West Indies cricket team at Wellington, the New Zealand camp experienced a roller-coaster of emotions. Blair Tickner — making a comeback to Test cricket after nearly three years — delivered a superb bowling spell, finishing with figures of 4 for 32 from 16 overs.
His performance played a key role in triggering a dramatic collapse in the West Indies batting order. Combined with an impressive debut from his teammate Michael Rae (3 for 67), the visitors were bundled out for 205. The early signs pointed to a commanding position for New Zealand.
A Dive Gone Wrong
However, the good vibes quickly evaporated when Tickner attempted a full-length dive to stop a boundary. In doing so, he landed awkwardly and suffered a left-shoulder injury. Immediately after hitting the ground, he was unable to rise, and on-field medical staff rushed to his aid. Unable to continue, Tickner was eventually stretchered off and transported to hospital — a dramatic and troubling end to what had been a stellar day for him.
That single act of athleticism — diving for a ball — turned catastrophic. The shoulder injury not only ended his involvement for the day, but left serious doubts about his availability for the remainder of the match. It was a blow not just to Tickner, but to a New Zealand side that had pinned hopes on his return.
New Zealand’s Strong Position Despite Setback
Despite the abrupt ending to Tickner’s Test-return, New Zealand finished the day in a favourable spot. After bowling out West Indies for 205, the hosts resumed batting and ended the day at 24 without loss. The early wickets and disciplined bowling had tilted momentum firmly in their favour.
Even with Tickner’s injury, the combined bowling effort — including Rae’s promising debut — underlined New Zealand’s control in the opening innings. As the match progresses, they remain in a good place to build a lead. However, the loss of Tickner will likely test their bowling depth. The incident served as a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in cricket — from celebration to concern in a flash.
