The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed Brendon McCullum as white-ball head coach for the men’s team on Tuesday 3rd September, 2023. McCullum, who was appointed as England’s Test head coach in May 2022, will now be responsible for all three formats from 2025 to 2027.
McCullum’s first assignment as England’s white-ball coach will start with a tour of India in January 2025. The current holder of this position is Marcus Trescothick who was placed there on an interim basis until the end of 2024 during the forthcoming Australia series and West Indies Tour.
About McCullum’s appointment, the managing director of England Rob Key said on behalf of the ECB:
“I’m delighted that Brendon has chosen to do both roles now with England. I believe we are incredibly fortunate that a coach of his quality is prepared to commit wholeheartedly to English cricket. Being able to align all teams now is particularly exciting and we look forward to taking on all challenges that come our way.”
He added:
“For the last two years, constant clashes between formats have made it challenging for the white-ball environment; fortunately, these are easing starting from January. The timing of the schedule (from January) will allow him to dedicate the necessary focus to both roles, and we’re confident this restructure will bring out the best in our players and coaching staff.”
By mid-2022, England had restructured its approach around a split coaching model that saw Matthew Mott supervising the white ball sides. Despite winning the 2022 T20 World Cup under his leadership, they had dismal performances during the 2023 ODI and 2024 T20 World Cups which resulted in Matthew Mott’s exit.

Brendon McCullum was happy for his appointment as coach of England’s white-ball team and looked forward to working with captain Jos Buttler. The 42-year-old also had his contract extended until the end of 2027, meaning he will oversee the ODI World Cup at that year’s close and the home Ashes earlier in the same year.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my tenure with the Test team and am enthusiastic about extending my role to the white-ball teams. I’m prepared to take on this new challenge and am eager to work closely with Jos Buttler and the team to build on the solid foundation we have. Rob Key’s vision for the future of English cricket deeply resonated with me,” McCullum stated, according to the ECB.
“I’m excited about the chance to lead both teams and appreciate the backing from the ECB and my family as I take on these new duties.”
“The talent within English cricket is immense, and I’m looking forward to helping these players reach their full potential. My goal is to create an environment where everyone can thrive and where we can continue to compete at the highest level across all formats,” he added.
Under McCullum’s guidance, England have seen success in Test cricket winning all but one series against India this year only. In addition, they have managed to dominate home tests in two months, hence whitewashing West Indies 3-0 and having a 2-0 lead in ongoing Sri Lanka series.
