Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer has made a big revelation, saying the CEO Venky Mysore is also involved in team selections. The comments came after a convincing win over Mumbai Indians at the DY Patil Sports Academy.
The Kolkata franchise has had a start-stop campaign in IPL 2022. They won the first four games but only managed to win two in their last eight fixtures. Hence, their chances of making it to the playoffs hang by the wire.
With results not going in their favour, KKR have made several changes to their playing XI. They made as many as five changes to their starting XI for their game against Mumbai. Throwing light on the same at the post-match presentation ceremony, Shreyas Iyer said:
“We discuss with the coaches and the CEO is also involved in the team selections. The players are very supportive in the decision making. I’m really happy with this.”
While it looks like a common phenomenon in the franchise leagues, this is the first time a captain has openly admitted to the CEOs being actively involved in team selections. Despite saying that, the changes worked in favour of Kolkata as they managed to secure a much-needed win.
“It was difficult for the new batters to come in” – Shreyas Iyer
Asked to bat first, Venkatesh Iyer gave KKR a fiery start before Mumbai pegged back. Nitish Rana also scored some crucial before Jasprit Bumrah’s five-wicket spell halted the innings and helped Mumbai restrict Kolkata to 165 runs.
While it looked like an easy chase, KKR bowlers did exceedingly well to bowl out Mumbai for 113 runs to secure a 52-run victory. Reacting to the big win, Shreyas Iyer said:
“If you see the matches that we lost previously, we had lost with a huge margin so coming back and winning by a big margin, it is really satisfying. We got a great start in the powerplay, even Nitish came in and took on the bowlers. It was difficult for the new batters to come in. Even when we went in to bowl, we were going to cramp MI by picking early wickets.”
“As you see the win, it was comprehensive. When I spoke to the players, they were really charged up to win the game. When you are on the losing side, it plays on your mind. I want to keep up with the same momentum,” he concluded.
