Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne has emphasized the difficulty of their final ICC Champions Trophy 2025 group-stage match against Afghanistan. Speaking ahead of the crucial fixture on Friday, Labuschagne made it clear that Australia is fully prepared for a competitive battle and is not taking their opponents lightly.
Recalling their close encounter during the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, where Australia secured a narrow three-wicket victory over Afghanistan thanks to Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 201, Labuschagne highlighted Afghanistan’s strong performance. He noted that Afghanistan had set a challenging target of 291, and their bowlers had pushed Australia to the brink by taking seven wickets.
Australia’s Strategy Against Afghanistan
Labuschagne outlined Australia’s approach to countering Afghanistan’s strengths. He acknowledged that Afghanistan’s spin attack has been particularly effective, especially in the middle overs.
“If we’re batting, we’ll be looking to combat their spin through the middle, which has been their really strong point,” he said.
Additionally, he praised Afghanistan’s pace attack, particularly Noor Ahmed, for their consistent performances in recent matches. Labuschagne also pointed out the capability of Afghanistan’s batting lineup, referencing their solid top-order performance in their last encounter.
“We know how good they are, we know the skill level they play with. We are going to ensure we come well-prepared and deliver a strong performance,” he added.
Australia Ready Despite Weather Challenges
With rain affecting multiple matches in the tournament, including Australia’s scheduled fixture against South Africa, Labuschagne stated that the team remains unaffected by weather-related disruptions. “Most of our preparation happened before the tournament. We’ve had a training rain-out and then a game rain-out, but our training is now indoors. The boys have played a lot, and we are ready,” he said.
Reflecting on Australia’s sole match in the tournament so far, a five-wicket win over England, Labuschagne expressed confidence in the team’s overall performance. He praised the contributions of key players such as Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, and Matt Short, who played crucial roles in the victory. Looking ahead to the Afghanistan clash, he emphasized the importance of every player stepping up.
“Going into tomorrow’s game, we all have to be ready to perform—whether you’re young or a senior player. We need to put up a strong score or chase down the total effectively,” he concluded.
