During an international match against Cyprus in Episkopi on Monday, Estonian cricketer Sahil Chauhan set a new record for the fastest century in T20 cricket by scoring 100 runs in just 27 balls. This broke the previous record held by Namibia’s Jan-Nicol Loftie Eaton, who had scored a century in 33 balls just under four months earlier.
Chauhan’s achievement was faster than Chris Gayle’s 30-ball century in IPL 2013, becoming the quickest century in any T20 format. Furthermore, Chauhan broke the record for most sixes in a men’s T20I innings by hitting 18 sixes, surpassing Hazratullah Zazai and Finn Allen who both previously held the record with 16 sixes.
On the first day of the six-game bilateral series, Estonia won both matches against Cyprus. Chauhan did not start well in the first game, getting dismissed for a duck on the first ball, but Estonia successfully chased down Cyprus’ score of 195 for 7 in the final over. In the second game, Cyprus batted first and scored 191 runs for the loss of 7 wickets.
Estonia got off to a rough start in their innings as the openers were dismissed early, putting them at 9 for 2 after just eight balls. Nonetheless, Chauhan then seized command and initiated an unyielding assault on the Cypriot bowlers.
Chauhan scored an impressive 144 runs from only 41 balls, with a remarkable strike rate of 351.21 during his explosive innings. His innings consisted of six boundaries and 18 maximums, showcasing remarkable power-hitting ability. His hundred not only established a new record for the quickest T20I century but also for the highest number of sixes in one T20I innings.
Taranjit Singh was Cyprus’ leading run scorer in their second innings, hitting 44 runs from just 17 balls with two fours and five sixes. Even with their impressive overall score, Cyprus was unable to resist Estonia’s determined pursuit. Estonia managed to achieve the target within 13 overs with six wickets still in hand.
