“Come Back After Doing Proper History”- Jhulan Goswami’s Sharp Reply At WPL Presser

A pre-season press conference ahead of the Women’s Premier League 2026 witnessed a sharp yet composed intervention from former India pacer Jhulan Goswami, who currently serves as the bowling coach of Mumbai Indians.

The moment came when a reporter directed a question at MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur, incorrectly referring to her dismissal in the 2017 Women’s World Cup final. Goswami immediately stepped in, pointing out that the factual premise of the question was wrong and stressing the importance of proper preparation before addressing players on such significant moments.

Setting The Record Straight On The 2017 World Cup Final

The reporter suggested that India’s chances in the 2017 final against England might have been different had Harmanpreet not been dismissed, claiming she was run out in the title clash. Goswami clarified that this was inaccurate. In reality, it was former India captain Mithali Raj who was run out after a crucial knock of 82.

While Harmanpreet was dismissed for 51 after being caught at deep backward square leg. India eventually lost the closely fought final by nine runs. Goswami firmly reminded the media to revisit the facts and historical context before framing such questions, underlining that accuracy is essential when discussing defining moments of a player’s career.

Harmanpreet’s Redemption And Mumbai Indians’ Wpl Journey

While memories of the 2017 heartbreak still resonate with fans, Harmanpreet Kaur has since rewritten her legacy in emphatic fashion. Earlier this year, she led India to a historic Women’s World Cup triumph, guiding the team to a commanding 52-run victory over South Africa in the final. That success helped put to rest lingering doubts from past setbacks and highlighted her growth as a leader.

At the franchise level, Harmanpreet has been equally influential. Under her captaincy, Mumbai Indians have lifted the WPL trophy twice, defeating Delhi Capitals in the finals of the 2023 and 2025 seasons. The team also reached the playoffs in 2024, where their campaign ended in the Eliminator against eventual champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru. As defending champions, Mumbai Indians will kick off their WPL 2026 campaign on the opening day, facing RCB on January 9, with Harmanpreet once again at the helm and expectations running high.
