On September 28, Cricket West Indies (CWI) made a pivotal decision to appoint Lynford Inverary as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This decision comes as the West Indies cricket board undergoes significant changes, with the current CEO Johnny Grave stepping down after nearly eight years at the helm.
Who is Lynford Inverary?
Lynford Inverary is an Antiguan national born in Guyana who has spent over a decade working within Cricket West Indies. His extensive experience with the organization includes several roles such as Business Planning Manager and Acting Corporate Secretary. This deep institutional knowledge makes him an ideal candidate for the leadership positions he is now assuming.
Johnny Grave’s Tenure as CEO
Johnny Grave became CEO of Cricket West Indies in February 2017, and his nearly eight-year tenure saw several significant milestones. Under his leadership, the region hosted three major World Cup events, including the 2018 Women’s T20 World Cup, the 2022 Under-19 World Cup, and the upcoming 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, which is co-hosted with the USA. His tenure also included the organization of the T20 World Cup in June 2023.
Effective October 1, 2024, Lynford Inverary will take on the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Cricket West Indies. This position carries significant responsibilities, including overseeing the day-to-day operations of the organization, improving governance, and ensuring that CWI runs efficiently.
From November 1, Inverary will also assume the role of Acting CEO, replacing Johnny Grave. His role will be pivotal in steering the organization through a period of transition. One of his main objectives will be implementing the CWI’s strategic plan for 2024-27, titled “The Long Run.”
Lynford Inverary is known for his strategic and pragmatic approach to leadership. He has a clear vision for the future of West Indies cricket, with a focus on improving operational efficiency, enhancing player development, and ensuring that the organization remains competitive both on and off the field.
Reaction to Inverary’s appointment
CWI President Dr. Kishore Shallow praised Inverary’s appointment, highlighting his deep institutional knowledge and leadership skills. Inverary himself expressed gratitude for the board’s vote of confidence and reiterated his commitment to shaping a bright future for West Indies cricket.
Looking ahead, CWI has several major events planned, including the co-hosting of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup with the USA. There is also a focus on developing youth and women’s cricket, ensuring that future generations continue to bring pride to the Caribbean.
