Dale Steyn, the great South African fast bowler, has great hopes for the Afghanistan men’s cricket team, saying that they would win an ICC limited-overs tournament in the next decade. And why not? The team has been in good form lately, doing very well in the recent white-ball ICC tournaments. They have beaten former winners England, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

Afghanistan’s successes are, however, quite recent. They almost reached the knockouts of the 2023 ODI World Cup, while they earned a place in the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup and notably eliminated Australia. The chances for the team appear bright with consistent improvement and Steyn’s endorsement. Nevertheless, Steyn also stressed the need for patience, signifying that Afghanistan players must learn how to construct their innings and stay patient to achieve success in the long run.

“They want things to happen so quickly”- Dale Steyn

Dale Steyn, a cricket icon and former South Africa bowler, has predicted that Afghanistan will win an ICC limited-overs competition within the next ten years. There’s a catch, though.

“We live in a time now where people are not patient enough. We can hardly watch two seconds on an Instagram story and it just feels like the Afghanistan players are similar when they’re playing their cricket,” Steyn was quoted as saying on ESPNCricinfo.

“Patience is one of the biggest things that Afghanistan players need to learn, and once they get that down, honestly, in the next decade, they could win ICC tournaments, for sure. They want things to happen so quickly. This ball must be a wicket, there’s no patience to building up and taking a wicket. The batters are the same sometimes, they’re batting in the first over. There’s so much movement happening in the crease, so they’re trying to hit a six and they’re trying to get the game going,” Styen said.
