Over the years, the world is suffering from a disease called ”racism” and the cricketers aren’t away from that. Recently, the West Indian cricketer Darren Sammy has revealed that he faced racism from his teammates during his stay with Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL.
Darren Sammy recently exposed that he and Thisara Perera were called “Kalu” when they were part of the Indian Premier League for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Kalu, a Hindi word, means a black person in English.
Wants clarity over racism in Hyderabad: Darren Sammy
Seeking clarification, Darren Sammy stated that he will be messaging all his teammates, who used to call him by that word and had laughs. Sammy released a video on Monday on Instagram, in which he elaborated his feelings when got to know the meaning of the word he and Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera were called in the SRH dressing room.
“I have played all over the world and I have been loved by many people, I have embraced all dressing rooms where I have played, so I was listening to Hasan Minhaj as to how some of the people in his culture describe black people,” Sammy said in a video posted on his Instagram account.
“This does not apply to all people, so after I found out a meaning of a certain word, I had said I was angry on finding out the meaning and it was degrading, instantly I remembered when I played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, I was being called exactly the same word which is degrading to us black people,” he added.

However, recently, Sammy’s teammates during that time in SRH, Irfan Pathan, Venugopal Rao, and Parthiv Patel said they were not aware of any such racial comments made towards the West Indian all-rounder.
Sammy has been vocal about racism following the killing of George Floyd in the USA. Earlier, the West Indian had urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) and other cricket boards across the globe to support the fight against racism.
