Darwin Could soon get its first international cricket game in seventeen years. The last time Darwin hosted an international cricket game it was in 2008. But after these many years, things are brewing as such where Darwin could get to host two T20i games when South Africa tours Australia in the winter series. The dates for the winter series are not out yet. However, what’s confirmed is that South Africa will play three T20i and three ODIs.
Reports & Official Statement
According to a report from ESPN Cricinfo, Darwin will host two T20i, and then one T20i and ODI will be played in Cairns. The last two ODIs will be played in Mackay. Things are not final yet as an official schedule is yet to come from Cricket Australia (CA).
If Darwin gets to host these games, it will be a huge boost for the Northern Australia as cricket being a global sport will attract many fans to the stadium and boost local economy as well. The report said that local officials are counting on the matches to be locked in.
NT Cricket CEO Gavin Dovey told AAP that, “I’ve been clear from the moment I arrived in 2023 that we’re driven to bring international cricket back to the Northern Territory. The last time we hosted international cricket was 2008 and that’s simply far too long.
The game has changed a hell of a lot since then. Just look at the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy or its return to the Olympics in LA 2028 for an example of its power and scale.”
Australia and South Africa Clash in Darwin
Both South Africa and Australia couldn’t reach the finals of the recently held Champions Trophy (CT) 2025. While Australia didn’t really come out with its A team due to injuries, it will still be an opportunity for both teams to get their momentum back in international cricket.
Before all this, don’t forget, there is IPL (Indian Premier League) to be played. It will be interesting to see if Darwin could get these games.
