Veteran West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell has expressed his desire to continue playing internationally for two more years, with a focus on the next T20 World Cup. He feels fitter than ever and sees no reason to retire.
Russell was part of the West Indies teams that won the T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016. Now 36, he is currently with the Trinbago Knight Riders for CPL 2024. Although he has scored only 56 runs in five matches, he boasts a strike rate of 207.40, though he has taken just one wicket in that time.
As the West Indies prepare for three T20Is in Sri Lanka, Russell shared his thoughts in a quote to India Today:
“I definitely want to play the World Cup of 2026 because there is a lot of talent that you know could have. I could have walked away from the game international-wise but I just want to see the youngsters do well in terms of all-rounders. I still can hit the ball anywhere I want to hit the ball, still bowling at a good pace, still fit, can move around. I don’t see why I should stop.”
The powerful all-rounder last represented the national team in the T20 World Cup semi-final against South Africa earlier this year, where the hosts were defeated and subsequently eliminated from the tournament.
“I’ve spoken with Sammy, and he mentioned that he wants me to continue playing some international cricket”- Andre Russell
Russell also mentioned discussing with coach Darren Sammy the possibility of extending his career, adding:
“I’ve talked with Sammy and he said he wants me to keep playing some international cricket. And I think by looking around and seeing the talent that’s in the Caribbean, I think I’m going to push my body and push myself to play international cricket for another two years.”
West Indies will face Sri Lanka in three ODIs and three T20Is starting October 13.
