In an unexpected incident, play was briefly stopped on Day 3 of the second Test between Bangladesh and Ireland in Dhaka on Friday, November 21, due to an earthquake. The game was halted for three minutes as players, umpires, and spectators gathered cautiously amid panic.

ESPNcricinfo reported that the tremors struck around 10:38 am local time (10:08 am IST) with a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter Scale. The epicentre was Madhhabdi, located 40 kilometres from Dhaka. At least two buildings sustained damage, though no casualties were reported. Spectators sought open areas for safety, while some moved closer to the field.

Staff and journalists quickly evacuated the five-storey media centre, relocating to safer spots. Reports also indicated that the tremors were felt in parts of northern India, including Kolkata and Guwahati, which is set to host the second Test between India and South Africa, starting Saturday, November 22.

Bangladesh held the upper hand over Ireland as play resumed following a brief earthquake interruption. At the time, the hosts were 69 without loss, with openers Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shadman Islam at the crease, leading by 280 runs. Batting first, Bangladesh posted 476 in their opening innings, with Litton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim scoring centuries of 128 (192) and 106 (214) respectively.

Rahim notably became the first Bangladeshi to score a century in his 100th Test. For Ireland, Andy McBrine impressed with the ball, taking 6/109, while Matthew Humphreys and Gavin Hoey claimed two wickets each. In reply, Ireland were bowled out for 265 in their first innings.

Lorcan Turcan top-scored with 75 off 171 balls, while Stephen Doheny contributed 46 (77) and Jordan Neill added 49 (83). Taijul Islam was Bangladesh’s standout bowler, taking four wickets, supported by Khaled Ahmed and Hasan Murad, who claimed two wickets each.

Bangladesh currently lead the two-match series 1-0, following their innings-and-47-run victory in the opening match at Sylhet.
