New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is strongly backing the redevelopment of Auckland’s Eden Park, which includes the addition of a roof to protect the ground from rain. Scott Weenink, NZC’s chief executive, views this renovation as vital for Auckland’s sports scene, extending beyond just cricket.
He believes the project will elevate Eden Park to a premier venue for major Test matches against top cricketing nations like Australia, India, and England. Currently, Eden Park, with its distinctive oval shape and uneven boundaries, is better suited for shorter formats such as ODIs and T20Is and has hosted only one Test match in the past decade.
Weenink said: “The Eden Park re-development makes much more sense across the board.”
