ENG vs IND 2021: Michael Vaughan Slams England & India’s Batting Quality On Day 1 Of Oval Test

Michael Vaughan-Virat Kohli

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan was utterly disappointed with the way the batters from both sides batted on day 1 of the Oval Test. A total of 13 wickets fell on a surface that is considered the best for batting among all the grounds in England. India after scoring 191 in the first innings, took three England wickets including the wicket of Joe Root.

Talking to The Test Match Special Podcast, Vaughan slammed the batters from both sides for their performance on the opening day of the Test match.

“We know at the Oval that you get a true bounce. I haven’t seen any ball kept low or bounce too much. You have got to expect a little bit of movement when the clouds are around. I think it’s been a very good day for bowling.  Don’t think it has been a great day for catching. because there have been catches that have been dropped. I think it has been a really poor day for the craftsmanship of Test match batting” said Vaughan.

Someone Should Have Scored Big On That Surface: Michael Vaughan

He further said that someone from the two teams should have scored big runs given the batting talent in the two teams. Indian skipper Virat Kohli scored exactly 50. Meanwhile, Joe Root, after three consecutive hundreds fell for 21 on the first day.

“You can’t tell me that with the talent of players in both sides someone shouldn’t be getting a big score on that kind of surface.”

Earlier in the day, the non-selection of Ravichandran Ashwin in the Indian XI became a subject of debate. Vaughan too joined the debate saying that Ashwin’s non-selection was perhaps the biggest event of the Test match so far.

The non selection of @ashwinravi99 has to be greatest NON selection we have ever witnessed across 4 Tests in the UK !!! 413 Test wickets & 5 Test 100s !!!! #ENGvIND Madness …” tweeted Vaughan.
