ENG vs IND 2021: Watch: Shardul Thakur And Mohammed Shami Speaks About Jonny Bairstow’s Dismissal

Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Shami picked up five wickets together as England were bowled out for 183 runs in the first innings. India then were 21 for no loss at stumps with both their openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma batting on nine each. Shami picked up Sibley, Bairstow and Dan Lawrence while Shardul picked up the key wicket of Joe Root and Ollie Robinson. 

Bairstow and Root added a 72-run stand for the fourth wicket. In the process, Root overtook Alastair Cook to become England’s leading run-scorer in international cricket. Taking to BCCI’s Rajal Arora after the game, Shami and Shardul spoke about what brought an end to Bairstow’s innings and led to England’s collapse in the lower-middle-order.

Shardul spoke Indian skipper Virat Kohli was unsure about going for the review after losing a review earlier in the game. Shami trapped Bairstow on the backfoot and it looked quite adjacent for a wicket. Shardul and Shami both insisted Kohli and he finally took the review which turned out to be a successful one. 

The replays showed that the ball pitched outside off stump but the impact was in line and the ball headed to hit the stumps. The wicket was a relief as Kohli finally called the DRS right. Earlier in the day, he was forced to take another review by Rishabh Pant which gave Mohammed Siraj his only wicket of the innings. 

The Indian bowlers had a memorable first day on the field as they dismissed the English batting line-up for a paltry score. With the ball, Bumrah picked up 4/46. Mohammed Shami picked up 3 for 28 while Shardul Thakur picked up a couple of wickets including the prized wicket of Root. England added 23 runs for the final wicket before Anderson was cleaned up by Bumrah.
