England Likely To Part Ways With Matthew Mott Soon – Reports

England are going to initiate their white-ball reformation languishing in a dismal run since the 2022 T20 World Cup. Despite a semi-final run at the 2024 T20 World Cup, Jos Buttler and Matthew Mott faced harsh scrutiny about their captaincy and head coaching roles respectively.

As indicated in an article from the Telegraph, Buttler will remain as captain for the transition but after only two years in charge, Mott is likely to be fired. The move to relieve Mott was made following an inspection done by England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) managing chief Rob Key after the team departed from the Caribbean.

Initially, the tenure of the Australian coach was marked by success when his team won the T20I series against Pakistan; moreover, they triumphed in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Nevertheless, things have not been so good afterwards.

In fact, England didn’t qualify for the knockout stage during their 2023 ODI World Cup while in 2024 they lost out to mighty teams such as Australia South Africa and India during their T20 World Cup run.

According to reports, Buttler wants the upcoming head coach to have a wealth of knowledge about 21st-century cricket and vast experience in international cricket.

Several coaches associated with IPL fulfil these requirements but it is not clear if Mott’s replacement will get to experiment with cash-rich leagues such as IPL besides taking care of his international duties concurrently, especially because this also involves conflict between different interests in play.

Kumar Sangakkara, Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) director of cricket, is being mentioned as early contender for the post. The ex-Sri Lankan captain had been working closely with Buttler for years in the same IPL franchise. Michael Hussey is another possible candidate as he has held a consultative position earlier and now looks after Welsh Fire, which plays in “The Hundred” events.

Some outside candidates include former England players like Andrew Flintoff and Jonathan Trott. The ex-all-rounder has been unofficially attached to the England setup for some time now, and just lately got his first significant coaching job with the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred 2024.

On the contrary, Trott has done miracles with the Afghanistan team since he took command. Recently, he led them to the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final. The ECB might be able to name Mott’s successor ahead of their next international white-ball task which is going to take place in September when they play a home series against Australia.

Buttler’s calf injury is less serious than first thought; he’ll join The Hundred and England’s home series against Australia

The England white-ball captain got hurt on his calf whilst preparing himself for a spell at The Hundred tourney with Manchester Originals. All the same, results from medical imaging do not show any tears contrary to earlier fears making it possible for him to take part in later events of this contest

This also indicates that he will be present for the white-ball series against Australia. As England’s squad has many old players, this series is critical in the process of changing in the country. There are three T20Is and five ODIs as part of Australia’s tour of England starting from September 11 onwards.
