England fast bowler Harry Gurney has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket with immediate effect after failing to recover sufficiently from a shoulder injury. He was last seen in action during the 2019 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) where he represented Melbourne Renegades.
Incidentally, the 34-year-old gave up red-ball cricket in 2019 to focus on his growing reputation as a short-form specialist, a role that saw him travel the world’s franchise circuit with deals in Australia, India, Pakistan, and the West Indies.
Harry Gurney announces retirement
After winning the Big Bash with Melbourne Renegades in 2019, Harry Gurney was briefly linked with an England recall but the chance never came and he was unfit to play a part in the Notts Outlaws’ Vitality Blast victory last year. He took to Instagram to share the news with his fans and followers.
“The time has arrived for me to hang up my boots,” he said. “After trying to recover from the recent injury to my shoulder, I am truly disappointed to have to end my playing career as a result of it. Cricket has been my life for 24 years and has taken me on an incredible journey that I will cherish forever.
“Playing for England, in the IPL and winning eight trophies at home and abroad including the Blast, Big Bash and CPL has exceeded my wildest dreams,” Harry Gurney added.
The left-arm pacer represented England in 10 ODIs and two T20 Internationals picking 11 and three wickets respectively. Harry Gurney has also represented Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League. He was bought by Kolkata for the 2019 Indian T20 League and he earned the Man of the Match on his debut. Harry Gurney played eight matches in total for the franchise and scalped seven wickets before an injury ruled him out of the next season.
Gurney is the joint owner of a pub with county team-mate and England star Stuart Broad and is now set to focus on his business interests.
