India’s 10-test marathon against Bangladesh begins today, September 19, in Chennai. Captain Rohit Sharma has urged his players to trust in themselves as they embark on this arduous road.
The Indians will play five home Tests, three against Bangladesh and two against New Zealand, before heading to Australia for the much anticipated Border Gavaskar Trophy in November. The five-game series Down Under begins next month.
Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of Bangladesh, won the toss and chose to field first in the Chennai Test. The choice was probably made to take advantage of the pitch’s moisture content and the seamers’ ability.
India is hoping to maintain their dominance after a stellar home record. But Bangladesh’s recent wins over Pakistan on Pakistani territory promise to make this series an exciting matchup. For Rohit Sharma’s team to prevail against Bangladesh, they need to support their abilities.
“We had a good prep leading up to this one”- Rohit Sharma
India would have chosen to bowl first as well, as per captain Rohit Sharma, considering the difficult circumstances in Chennai. The Indian team has trained well, according to the captain, and they will try to play as they know how.
As they prepare for the ten Test matches that lie ahead, Rohit stated that every game will matter. Before the game, according to the captain of India, the team felt assured.
“I would have done that as well (bowl first). Little soft, the pitch. It’s going to be challenging conditions. We have prepared well, so we should back our potential and play the way we know. Looking at the 10 Test matches, every match is important. But we want to focus on what lies in front of us. We came here a week back, we had a good prep leading up to this one. We feel confident. Three seamers and two spinners – Bumrah, Akash Deep, Siraj, Ashwin and Jadeja,” said Rohit.
