Explained: How The New Virtual Group Format Works In IPL 2022?

IPL 2022

The BCCI announced on Friday that the 10 teams in IPL 2022 will play 14 league matches each (7 home and 7 away). Each team will play five teams twice and the remaining four teams only once.

The format is similar to that used for the 2011 edition when IPL had two new teams in Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala.

What is the new format in IPL 2022?

The 10 teams have been divided into two virtual groups of five, based on a seeding system determined by the number of IPL championships won and the number of final appearances.

Group A – Mumbai Indians (5 titles, 6 finals), Kolkata Knight Riders (2 titles, 3 finals), Rajasthan Royals (1 title, 1 final), Delhi Capitals (0 titles, 1 final), Lucknow Super Giants (0 titles, 0 finals)

Group BChennai Super Kings (4 titles, 9 finals), Sunrisers Hyderabad ( 1 title, 2 finals), Royal Challengers Bangalore (0 titles, 3 finals), Punjab Kings (0 titles, 1 final), Gujarat Titans (0 titles, 0 finals)

How many matches will each team play?

Every team will continue to continue to play 14 matches in the league stage of IPL 2022 as it is has been the case in past seasons.

Each team will play twice against the teams in their group and against the team in the same row in the other group. Against the remaining four teams in the other group, each team will play only once.

For example, KKR will play twice in the league stages against Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad (the team in the same row in the other group). Kolkata Knight Riders will play only once against Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans.

Who will qualify for the playoffs?

Despite there being two different groups, there will be a single group-based point system. The ten teams will compete in the same league table with the four teams with the best points tally at the end of the league stage making it to the playoffs.

When will IPL 2022 take place?

The BCCI also confirmed that the IPL 2022 will kick off on March 26 and wrap up on May 29, with 70 league matches set to be played across four venues in Mumbai and Pune.
