When the Indian cricket team plays Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup Super Eight, they will honour the memory of former fast bowler David Johnson by donning black armbands. This gesture is in remembrance of Johnson, who unfortunately died on Thursday after falling from his Bengaluru balcony on the fourth story.

In their Super Eight match at Kensington Oval, Barbados, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are hoping that India will have a good beginning following the captain’s decision to bat first against Afghanistan.

Rohit, interestingly enough, decided to send his team in first in this tournament. Right-arm pacer Mohammed Siraj has been dropped from the team by India to accommodate left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

“Team India will wear black armbands today”- BCCI

David Johnson, a former Indian team member, succumbed to a cold death on Thursday in what many could term a rather wrong way to die. Thus, it would be the Men in Blue who were at the time hosting Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 in Bridgetown, Barbados. The text moves to the later time ‘in his honor’—meaning for him, they put on black armbands.

The man who died is 52 years old, and his death was revealed on Thursday when he fell from the fourth floor of his Bengaluru residence and eventually died from his injuries. The police report of the vicinity indicates that an inquiry is being conducted to determine whether the incident was indeed a suicide. On X, several other Indian cricket players, including Sachin Tendulkar & Virender Sehwag, also posted some sort of message.

In a message posted on social media, the BCCI asserted: It is with this background that in a space that was relatively quiet and relaxed on social media, the BCCI came out vehemently saying:

“Team India will wear black armbands today in memory of former Indian fast bowler David Johnson, who passed away on Thursday.”
