In a disappointing beginning to India’s first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai, captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed for just six runs, drawing sharp criticism from fans on social media. Rohit, who has historically struggled in Test matches against Bangladesh, became the first Indian wicket to fall, caught at slip after facing 19 balls.

His dismissal left India in trouble at 34-3 by the 10th over. Bangladesh’s young pacer Hasan Mahmud shone in the early session, taking all three wickets, including that of Rohit Sharma. Mahmud almost had Rohit out earlier, but an umpire’s decision saved the Indian skipper from a leg-before dismissal on his 13th ball. However, Mahmud did not have to wait long; just six balls later, he bowled an outswinger that Rohit edged to the slip cordon, ending his brief time at the crease.

Rohit’s average against Bangladesh has now dropped to 9.75, his lowest against any Test opponent. His struggles against the Tigers continue to be a topic of conversation, as they remain the only team he has never scored a fifty against in Test matches. Before this match, Rohit held a poor average of 11.00 against Bangladesh, with previous scores of 6, 6, and 21. His dismissal today was also the first time he has been removed for a single-digit score in the first innings of a home Test match.

Fans were quick to express their disappointment on social media, especially on X (formerly Twitter). One frustrated fan wrote, “I might get cooked, but I’ll still speak facts. Please retire Rohit Sharma; it’s becoming hard for us to defend your selfless PR.”

With crucial players such as Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli also falling for low scores, India is in a difficult position early in the match. The responsibility now falls on the middle order to salvage the innings, but the early collapse has already cast a shadow over the prospects of a solid performance against the Tigers.
