India secured their first victory of the England tour with a convincing six-wicket win in the opening ODI, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. After winning the toss, England chose to bat but were bowled out for 258 in 47.5 overs. Axar Patel starred with four wickets, while Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar claimed two wickets apiece.
Chasing 259, India suffered early setbacks as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli departed cheaply. Captain Shubman Gill anchored the innings with a fluent 80 before retiring hurt. Washington Sundar (52*) and Axar Patel (57*) then combined in an unbeaten partnership, guiding India to victory with six wickets in hand in 45.2 overs.
After enduring a 0-4 loss in the five-match T20I series, India finally bounced back with a victory. Fans were thrilled as the Men in Blue secured the win at Edgbaston.
“The perfect response after the T20I setback! 🇮🇳🔥Gill’s men came back stronger,” a fan tweeted on X.

“After 7 matches without a win, India are finally victorious – that too in comprehensive fashion. They’ve beaten England by 6 wickets, with 28 balls remaining. It’s an important win that breaks a demoralising tour. Though it is India’s 6th consecutive win in ODIs,” another tweet read.

The Men in Blue extended their dominance in England by registering a sixth successive ODI victory, their longest winning streak in the format on English soil. Their previous best was five consecutive wins, a feat they had achieved on three separate occasions.
India Eye Series Victory In Cardiff
The second ODI is scheduled to be played at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Thursday, July 16. Buoyed by their convincing victory in the series opener, India will head into the contest with confidence. Led by Shubman Gill, the visitors will be eager to secure an unassailable 2-0 lead and wrap up the three-match series with one game still to play.
India also enjoyed success on their previous tour of England in 2022, winning the three-match ODI series 2-1. This time, they will be aiming to better that result by completing a 3-0 clean sweep. The Men in Blue have also held the upper hand in recent meetings, winning eight of their last 13 ODIs against England.
