Former Indian Test opener Wasim Jaffer has been named the Head coach of Odisha’s senior men’s team. The decision was taken following a meeting of OCA’s Cricket Advisory Committee as Jaffer would replace former state captain Rashmi Ranjan Parida. He was in charge for two full seasons. Wasim Jaffer will take over from this domestic season.

A stalwart in domestic cricket, Jaffer would bring a lot of experience to the table. Also easy to approach, Wasim Jaffer can shape the future of young cricketers coming out of the state.

“He (Jaffer) will be the head coach. He has been given a two-year contract,” Subrata Behera, Odisha Cricket Association CEO said.

“Besides the development of cricket across all age-groups, he (Jaffer) will also be a part of coaches development programme across the state,” he added.

Wasim Jaffer has worked with Punjab Kings

Wasim Jaffer is the leading run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy. This will also be his second stint as a coach for a domestic team. He previously coached Uttrakhand but resigned after he had a fallout with the association.

Jaffer, who has played 31 Tests and 2 ODIs, is also the batting coach of Punjab Kings, which plays in the Indian Premier League. The Mumbai stalwart, who later played for Vidarbha at the fag end of his illustrious career winning back-to-back Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup.

Odisha had last reached quarters in the 2019-20 season when they lost to Bengal and batting has been the team’s weakness for a long-time. India’s domestic season will start on October 20 with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

The Ranji Trophy will be played from November 16 to February 19, 2022, and will be followed by Vijay Hazare Trophy from February 23, 2022.
