The Sri Lanka Cricket selectors named a 25-member squad for the series against India. The two teams will play three one-day internationals and as many T20 internationals. Dasun Shanaka will take over the leadership from Kushal Perera of the Sri Lankan side. Dhananjaya De Silva will be his deputy.

Dasun will be Sri Lanka’s sixth limited-overs captain in the last four years. Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Lasith Malinga, Dimuth Karunaratne, and Kushal Perera are the other five. He has also led the team in a three-match T20 International series against Pakistan in 2019.

Frequent leadership changes reflect the inconsistency and instability in Sri Lankan cricket. Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has trolled the Sri Lanka cricket team for the same. He retweeted a post on his Twitter handle and commented:

“Yaar itne to ladke dp nahi badalte jitne SL ne captain badle hai.”

The leadership change comes after Sri Lanka’s humiliating loss in England against the hosts. They lost both the one-day and T20 international series due to their lacklustre performance throughout the series.

Apart from their disastrous on-field performance, Sri Lankan cricket is in news for all the wrong things in the last few weeks. Before the start of the England tour, three of the Sri Lankan players were suspended for breaking the bio-bubble protocols. Kusal Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella, and Danushka Gunathilaka were roaming outside in a public space in Durham.

After seven players from the England contingent that played against Sri Lanka tested positive for Covid 19, head Coach Grant Flower and Team analyst from the Sri Lanka squad have also tested positive for the Virus.

As per reports, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board is planning to reschedule the series against India. The series will most likely start on July 17 or July 18.
