India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir was all praise for Shubman Gill, describing him as a captain who has “already passed his toughest test in England.” As India wrapped up a dominant 2-0 Test series win over the West Indies — Gill’s first home assignment as skipper — Gambhir said the young leader fully deserved his elevation across formats.
Speaking on his 44th birthday, the coach called the series victory the “best gift” he could have asked for and credited Gill’s composure and work ethic for India’s success.
Gambhir made it clear that Gill’s appointment was no act of generosity or convenience. “(By) just allowing him to be himself. I think no one has done him a favour by appointing him the Test captain or the one-day captain.
I think he deserves every bit of it,” he stated firmly. According to Gambhir, Gill has earned every leadership role through his performances and temperament, not through reputation or potential.
Passing the England Test: Gill’s Defining Moment
Reflecting on Gill’s growth as a leader, Gambhir pointed out that the young captain’s biggest challenge came in England earlier this year. “He has already passed his toughest test as captain — that was in England, five Tests away from home in tough conditions against a quality team,” Gambhir said.
The demanding tour was Gill’s first major assignment as skipper, and the way he carried himself through those two and a half months, Gambhir said, revealed both resilience and tactical maturity.
“I know it’s tough for him. It was tough, and I’ve said it many times, that England was probably the toughest Test for him. Five Test matches over the course of two, two and a half months, against a quality England side.
What more could he have faced?” Gambhir remarked. He emphasized that Gill earned the respect of the dressing room through his calm demeanor and ability to make the right calls under pressure — traits vital for a young captain leading across multiple formats.
Staying Grounded and Focused on the Present
Despite the growing excitement about India’s prospects in the next World Test Championship cycle, Gambhir made it clear that neither he nor Gill is looking too far ahead. “For me, I am not looking ahead at what is going to happen in the World Test Championship final in 2027. That is still a long, long way away,” he said.
His focus, instead, remains on consistency and immediate results. “Staying in the present is very important. It was important for us to win this series at home. More importantly, we have got a very busy schedule. Hopefully, we can keep continuing from here.”
As India’s new era under Gill begins to take shape, Gambhir’s words underline both confidence and caution — a belief that the young captain has the talent and temperament to succeed, provided he continues to stay grounded and driven.
