Glenn Maxwell has talked about how it was odd to be removed from the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team just a few weeks before the 2025 Indian Premier League auction. The Australian all-rounder has been an important part of the RCB team ever since he joined in 2021, but without any warning, the team displayed his contract.
Among Virat Kohli (INR 21 Cr), Rajat Patidar (INR 11 Cr), and Yash Dayal (INR 5 Cr), RCB has retained the three big names for the next season at the expenditure of a staggering INR 37 Cr. Also, apart from INR 83 Cr available in their auction purse, this Bengaluru based franchise has an additional three Right to Match (RTM) cards as well.
The RCB management’s decision was clarified by Maxwell’s leaving meeting. Even though Maxwell is an essential part of RCB’s lineup, other teams are taking notice of his release. Fans are excited to see how RCB would fare in the IPL 2025 auction with their huge remaining purse and RTM cards.
Maxwell will search for a new squad in the interim so he can maintain his stellar IPL performance. The departure of the Australian signifies a big shift for RCB, and everyone will be watching to see what the team does next.
“It was actually a really beautiful exit meeting”- Glenn Maxwell
Ahead of the 2025 big auction, Glenn Maxwell, an all-rounder for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Australia, talked about how his team did not retain him. The all-rounder recently talked about how the team delivered the message to him and that he was pleased with how they handled it.
“I got a phone call from Mo Bobat and Andy Flower. I sat there on a Zoom call, and they sort of explained to me the decision not to be retained. And, it was actually a really beautiful exit meeting, if that could be possible. We ended up talking about the game for about half an hour and talking about their strategy and what they were looking to get to do going forward. So, I was really happy with that,” said Maxwell on ESPNCricinfo’s Around the Wicket show.
“I wouldn’t say my RCB journey’s over”- Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell is still hopeful about his future with the team and his relationship with RCB despite being released.
“They were obviously changing a few of their staff as well. So they needed to get that sorted before they started talking to players. And I understood that process was going to take a bit of time. And, but yeah, you’re always sort of getting a little bit edgy around that, that last date about whether you’re going to be retained and not so sure what’s going to happen.” Glenn Maxwell said.
“But, completely understand what the direction they’re heading in. They went with three unions to build that core. And, yeah, hopefully their overseas can complement those locals. Yeah I wouldn’t say my RCB journey’s over, but, yeah, I’d certainly love to get back there. It was a great franchise to play for and really enjoyed my time there,” he added.
Maxwell, a highly sought-after all-rounder, struggled for RCB, scoring only 52 runs and an average of 5.77. However, he contributed with six wickets and an economy of 8.06. RCB’s massive purse could potentially break the bank.
