Facing criticism and contemplating retirement, Pakistani fast bowler Haris Rauf recently opened up about his decision to step back from international cricket, particularly the Test series against Australia in December 2023. The 30-year-old expressed feeling demoralized by the backlash he received for opting out of the crucial series. The negativity prompted thoughts of retiring from international cricket, a decision that weighed heavily on him.

Haris Rauf revealed that it was the support and advice from his family and friends that ultimately swayed his decision to continue playing for the national team. Despite the challenges, Rauf’s resilience prevailed, and he decided to persevere through the difficulties he faced.

His absence from the Test series against Australia raised eyebrows, especially after discussions with chief selector Wahab Riaz and team director Mohammad Hafeez. Riaz disclosed that Rauf initially expressed his intention to participate in the series but later reversed his decision, leading to confusion surrounding his commitment.

Contrary reports suggested that Rauf had never made a firm commitment to play in the series, adding a layer of complexity to the situation. The fast bowler cited workload management as the primary reason for opting out of the Australia tour. Currently, he is showcasing his skills in the Big Bash League 2023-24, representing the Melbourne Stars.

Rauf had previously highlighted his workload concerns during the ODI World Cup 2023 in India, communicating with former chief coach Mickey Arthur. In the tournament, he faced challenges, emerging as the most expensive bowler, conceding 533 runs from nine innings. Despite picking up 16 wickets at an average of 33.31, his economy stood at 6.74.

The fast bowler explained to Arthur that his body, based on past experiences of injuries in the longest format, couldn’t withstand the demanding workload of playing in three Test matches. His reluctance to participate in the Australia series persisted, even with persuasion from Arthur. Notably, Rauf had suffered an injury after bowling only 13 overs in the solitary Test of his career against England in December 2022.

Amidst this, Haris Rauf has actively participated in the Big Bash League 2023-24, featuring in four matches and securing six wickets at an impressive average of 16 and an economy of 8. His performance in the league stands as a testament to his resilience and commitment to the sport.
