England batter Harry Brook has been banned from the Indian Premier League (IPL) for two years after pulling out of IPL 2025, despite being selected by Delhi Capitals in the auction. As per a report by Indian Express, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally communicated this decision to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
This ruling prevents Brook from registering for the IPL auction until 2027. A BCCI official confirmed that Brook and the ECB had been notified about the ban, emphasizing that all players were made aware of this policy before entering the auction.
BCCI’s Strict Policy on Player Withdrawals
The decision to ban Brook aligns with a policy recently introduced by the IPL governing body. According to the new rule, any player who registers for the auction and is picked by a franchise but later withdraws before the tournament begins will face a two-year suspension from both the league and the auction process. Brook was purchased by Delhi Capitals for ₹6.25 crore but later opted out, triggering the ban. The BCCI’s strict enforcement of this policy is meant to prevent disruptions caused by last-minute withdrawals.
Brook Prioritizes England Commitments
Brook defended his decision, stating that he needed time to rest and focus on England’s upcoming cricketing commitments. He described the past year as the busiest period of his career and emphasized the importance of recharging before crucial international fixtures.
England is set to play a home Test series against India in June, followed by the Ashes series from November to January. Brook had also withdrawn from IPL 2024 following the death of his grandmother. Despite the ban, he remains committed to representing his country, even if it means missing out on lucrative IPL opportunities.
