Harry Brook is set to be named England’s new T20I captain and is also a leading contender, alongside Ben Stokes, for the ODI captaincy, according to a report by ‘The Telegraph’. The 26-year-old batter previously served as vice-captain under Jos Buttler during England’s disappointing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.
Following Buttler’s resignation in February 2025, Brook has emerged as the frontrunner for the T20I leadership. Meanwhile, Stokes, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, remains a potential candidate for the ODI captaincy. Managing director Rob Key previously stated that the management had not ruled out the possibility of appointing Stokes as the white-ball skipper.
“I think nothing’s off the table. You look at every single option and you think, ‘what is the best thing to do?’ Ben Stokes is one of the best captains I’ve ever seen, so it’d be stupid not to look at him. It’s just the knock-on effect of what that means. You’re just looking for the best person, really, someone who you think can take this forward,” Key said via ESPNCricinfo.
Former England cricketer Stuart Broad described the idea of appointing Ben Stokes as the white-ball captain as a “desperate move.” The ex-England pacer also stated that he would be “speechless” if Stokes were given the role.
Harry Brook skips IPL 2025, sparking captaincy talk
Harry Brook, bought by Delhi Capitals (DC) for ₹6.25 crore at the mega-auction, withdrew from IPL 2025 due to personal reasons, marking his second consecutive season pulling out. As a result, he has reportedly been suspended from the league for two seasons.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan backed the BCCI’s rule on suspending players for tournament withdrawals but suggested that Brook’s potential bid for England’s white-ball captaincy might have influenced his decision.
“I get a feeling he’s probably going to be the white-ball captain for England down the line, so he just wants to focus his attention on England, which all the England fans would be happy with, but I think the IPL had to bring something in because it does derail the franchises in the piece. I don’t think he’s been replaced yet.” Vaughan said.
