As Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from the Twenty20 International competition for India, Gautam Gambhir commended them for their remarkable careers.

Rohit’s intelligent leadership has been essential in breaking the 11-year-long ICC title jinx, while player of the match Kohli scored 76 and helped India post 176 before they won by seven runs.

As he expressed his hope that Rohit and Kohli will continue to contribute to Indian cricket in Test and ODI matches, Gambhir appreciated their contributions to the sport on Sunday.

“They have retired with the World Cup win, and probably better than any script that was written. Both players are great. They have done a lot for Indian cricket, and congratulate them and wish them all the best,” Gambhir told PTI videos.

“But they are going to play two more formats, Test cricket and ODI cricket. I am sure they are going to keep contributing to the country and the team,” said the former opener.

BCCI President Roger Binny has made a significant announcement, suggesting that Gambhir will take over as India’s head coach. Earlier this month, Gambhir had gone through a hiring interview.

Binny picked Gambhir’s name and declared that India required a coach with experience in all three forms after the team won the T20 World Cup in Barbados.

“Gautam Gambhir has got a lot of experience and if he takes the job it’s going to be a good thing for Indian cricket. India needs a coach who played the game, and he has played in all three formats of the game,” Binny told news agency ANI.

India defeated South Africa, captained by Aiden Markram, in the decisive T20 World Cup final on June 29 in Barbados, which proved to be a thrilling match that broke their 11-year trophy drought.
