Virat Kohli once again displayed his humility and team-first attitude following Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) victory over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2025. Despite being named Player of the Match for his unbeaten 73 off 54 balls, Kohli openly questioned the decision, saying the award should have gone to Devdutt Padikkal.
The young opener had given RCB early momentum with a blistering 61 off 35 deliveries, including five fours and four sixes. Kohli emphasized that Padikkal’s knock was game-changing and deserved more recognition.
“I don’t know why they gave it to me, Dev made the difference today,” said Kohli after the match.
RCB’s Strategic Chase and Key Contributions
Chasing a modest target of 158 on a tough pitch at Mullanpur, RCB’s batting strategy was well-executed. While Kohli anchored the innings, Padikkal’s aggressive strokeplay ensured a strong platform early on. The left-hander’s departure in the 13th over didn’t slow RCB down, as Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma contributed effectively to finish the chase in 18.5 overs.

Kohli mentioned that his focus was on holding one end and accelerating at the right time. He acknowledged the importance of building partnerships and understanding team dynamics during the chase. The win marked a significant step in RCB’s push for playoff qualification.
RCB’s Form and Kohli’s Perspective on the Season
With this win, RCB took their points tally from eight to ten, an important leap in a tight playoff race. Kohli highlighted the importance of collecting points in every game and praised the squad’s consistency, especially in away fixtures. Reflecting on their successful auction strategy, Kohli credited the team’s balanced composition, including impactful players like Patidar, David, Jitesh, and Romario Shepherd.
He also emphasized the hunger and energy displayed by the squad this season, noting how their on-field intensity has translated into better performances. Kohli praised the ability of his teammates to counter-attack and adapt, something RCB had struggled with in past seasons. His remarks not only highlighted leadership but also a clear vision of how RCB is building momentum as the tournament progresses.
