Former Australia head coach John Buchanan feels that David Warner doesn’t fall into the category of the greats of the game. He expressed that the opener has been exceptional in his International career, but cannot be called as a ‘great’.

David Warner took retirement from Test and ODI cricket recently, after the Test series against Pakistan. He has scored 8786 Test runs at an average of 44.59, and 6932 runs in ODI cricket. In his final Test series, he scored 299 runs in three Test matches, including 164 in the first Test. Speaking to SEN Breakfast, John Buchanan spoke about the opening batter. He said,

“I think he’s certainly performed exceptionally well throughout this career, he sits on 8000+ runs, he’s played over 100 Test matches, over 160 ODIs and nearly 100 T20s. On performance base, he’s right up there.”

“But greats of the game, in my opinion, are people that do and have done something exceptional that others just can’t match, so, therefore, you automatically go to the Bradmans, McGraths, Warnes, they’re the greats in my opinion. Others come close but are just not in that category and I don’t see Warner in that category,” he added.

David Warner ‘looking forward’ to commentary stint

Australian opener David Warner is looking forward to his new role as a commentator. He has joined the Fox Cricket commentary team for the Test series against India later this year. He is also keen on playing in the Big Bash League. Talking about his future after retirement, David Warner recently said,

“I am keen to pursue playing Big Bash next year. There’s going to be conversations behind the scenes to allow me to do that. I’ve joined the Fox commentary team next year during the Test series against India, which I’m looking forward to.”
