Rohit Sharma’s cricketing journey has been a rollercoaster, with his recent performances raising questions about his future in Test cricket. While his T20I career ended on a high note after leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title, his form in other formats has taken a significant dip. The 37-year-old Indian skipper had a dismal 2024/25 Test season, scoring just 164 runs in eight matches at a shocking average of 10.93.
This slump contributed to India’s failure to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final for the first time, despite being early favourites. Former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist believes Rohit may call time on his cricketing career after the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Future in Doubt Ahead of the Pataudi Trophy
India’s next Test series, the five-match Pataudi Trophy in England, is set to kick off their new WTC cycle in June 2025. However, Gilchrist, who previously captained Rohit during their stint with the Deccan Chargers in the IPL, doubts the Indian captain will make the tour. Speaking on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Gilchrist said, “I don’t see Rohit going to England.
He mentioned reassessing things upon returning home, but he’s also a new father, which might influence his decision.” Gilchrist speculated that Rohit may choose to focus on family commitments rather than continuing with the rigors of Test cricket.
Champions Trophy, A Likely Farewell
India’s Champions Trophy campaign begins on February 20, 2025, against Bangladesh, with the final scheduled for March 9. Gilchrist suggested that Rohit might see the tournament as his swansong. “I think he’ll probably have a crack at the Champions Trophy, and that might be it for him,” said Gilchrist. Rohit’s struggles in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he scored just 31 runs in five innings at an average of 6.2, further highlight his waning form.
This poor run, combined with his decision to skip the series decider in Sydney, has fueled speculation about his Test career’s end. While Rohit assured fans during the Sydney Test that “I am not going anywhere,” the challenges ahead could prompt him to rethink his path forward.
