Australia captain Pat Cummins clarified Travis Head‘s celebration during the Melbourne Test against India. Head made a distinctive gesture after dismissing Rishabh Pant, breaking the partnership between Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Pant and Jaiswal had frustrated the Australian bowlers with a 33-over stand, looking set to guide India to a draw. However, Head dismissed Pant in the third session on Day 5 to end the partnership.

When asked about the meaning behind Head’s celebration, Pat Cummins explained at the post-match press conference:

“I didn’t see his celebration. What was it? It was above board. Oh sorry. Yes okay. I can explain that. It’s his finger is so hot, he’s got to put it in a cup of ice. Yeah, that’s what it is. That’s normally the running joke.”

“Was it the Gabba or somewhere, he got a wicket as well and just goes straight to the fridge, grabs a bucket of ice, puts his finger in and just walks in front of Lyon. Just like that. I think it’s very funny. So that’s what it would have been. Nothing else (laughs).”

Head bowled just five overs in the second innings but claimed the important wicket of Rishabh Pant. The part-time spinner finished with figures of 1/14 from his five overs.

Pat Cummins was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance at the MCG

Captain Pat Cummins starred for Australia, scoring 90 runs and taking six wickets in the Boxing Day Test against India. His all-round performance was key to Australia’s 184-run victory at the MCG.

For his efforts, Cummins was named Man of the Match. Australia now leads the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series 2-1, with the fifth Test set to begin on January 3 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
