Star batsman Virat Kohli has been recommended by former Team India captain Sourav Ganguly to open for the Men in Blue in the highly anticipated T20 World Cup 2024, which will be held in the USA and West Indies.

The Indian Premier League 2024 season, which ended recently, featured all three of the aforementioned players. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were the Bengaluru and Mumbai teams’ opening batsmen, while Ganguly was the Delhi Capitals’ director of cricket. After losing the eliminator, Kohli’s RCB side was eliminated from the edition, while Rohit and Ganguly’s squad ended in the bottom half.

With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma leading India in the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024, the focus has now turned to that tournament. Both of them will be responsible for helping the Men in Blue win their first international ICC title since the Champions title in England in 2013.

Given that Kohli was the leading scorer in both the previous T20 World Cup in Australia and the Indian Premier League in 2024, there will be heightened expectations for him.

“Virat Kohli will have to bat with freedom”- Sourav Ganguly

Former captain Sourav Ganguly suggests that Virat Kohli open the innings with captain Rohit Sharma because he believes it will be important for India if he can play with the same freedom in the T20 World Cup as he did in the IPL this year. To appease his detractors, Kohli played aggressively in the middle over and finished as the IPL 2024’s top run scorer.

In an exclusive conversation with RevSportz, Sourav Ganguly discussed many topics, including India’s starting lineup.

“I would open with Virat and Rohit. I want Virat to bat the way he did for RCB in the second half of the IPL. He has to bat with freedom. Needless to say, he is a great player, but for India to do well, Virat will have to bat with freedom like he did in the IPL. So my choice would be Virat and Rohit at the top of the order” Ganguly told Revsportz.

The star of the RCB showed consistency with an average of 61.75 while scoring 741 runs in 15 games. The most notable aspect of his batting, though, was his strike rate of 154.70, which was his highest in an IPL season.
