Australia player Usman Khawaja has taken a cheeky dig at the former cricketer Ian Chappell after he said that Khawaja can only perform well against mediocre bowling. Notably, he has been in the news in recent times where many experts have started believing that he could return to the Australian Test squad after having a good run in the Sheffield Shield.
While Chappell’s comment had started a debate in Australia, Khawaja’s teammate and Test batsman Marnus Labuschagne has supported Usman Khawaja to return to the Test team as well.
“Everyone’s got opinions, that’s fine – to me it’s water off a duck’s back,” Khawaja said speaking ahead of Queensland’s next Shield match beginning on Wednesday. “Chappell is not even the best player in his family, so if I’m going to take advice, I might take it from his younger brother, who I get along with very well too. GC (Greg Chappell) is a legend.”

“I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself. For me, it’s concentrating on one game at a time, (and) making sure I’m doing the right things for Queensland to win games. If I do that I know things will work out,” Usman Khawaja shared to the question asking him to respond to Chappell’s comments as well.
“I’m not convinced that [Usman] Khawaja is a good enough player – Ian Chapell

Former Australia cricketer Ian Healy recently said that he would also select Usman Khawaja in the Australian Test squad for the Ashes series. However, Chappell didn’t agree with that questioning Khawaja’s calibre as a Test player.
“I’m not convinced that Khawaja is a good enough player. Khawaja’s a good player against mediocre bowling, but against good bowling, I don’t think there’s much future there,” Ian Chappell said in an interview with Wide World of Sports. “I think everyone knows Usman Khawaja can make hundreds against that standard of bowling – but I’m not convinced that he’s going to make it against an England attack.”
Usman Khawaja has an average of over 40 in Test cricket and he has done well for them in the past as well and he could be an ideal replacement for the injured opener Will Pucovski as well.
