India is now dealing with the second wave of the coronavirus, and the number of cases is escalating every day. The number has spiked horribly over the past few weeks; the count has gone above 300,000 per day. The gloomy situation in the country can affect cricket and the aligned tournaments in the country.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will host the T20 World Cup 2021 edition in the months of October and November. The BCCI is likely to host the tournament in nine cities. The tournament will follow the bio-bubble protocols if the scenario does not improve.
T20 World Cup cannot go ahead in India – Ian Chappell
Former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell said that India should not host the T20 World Cup as the situation is appearing dark in the country. He also suggested shifting the tournament from Asia to any other country, and the United Arab Emirates can be kept as a backup option. The tournament was supposed to happen in 2020.
“It would be a matter of common sense not prevailing if it went ahead in India. Paul Keating once said to always back self-interest because you know it’s a goer, and you could substitute financial interest in this case.
“And that doesn’t apply just to cricket administrators, the money that’s been outlawed can be the only reason why the Olympics is still going ahead. But logic would tell you that the T20 World Cup can’t go ahead in India,” Chappell told Inside Sport.
BCCI is smoothly hosting the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 across six cities but players are pulling themselves out fearing the situation. Many fans have questioned the Board and suggested scrapping the tournament amidst the rise in the number of cases. Players like Liam Livingston, Andrew Tye, Kane Richardson, and Adam Zampa have withdrawn themselves recently. Ravichandran Ashwin has taken a break from the franchise-based league.
