ICC Board To Discuss Expenses For US Leg Of T20 World Cup During Meeting

The segment of the T20 World Cup held in the United States is reportedly over budget, prompting the influential ICC Board to address the financial losses during its meeting at the Annual Conference in Colombo on July 19.

There is concern among key board members that losses from the US leg of the tournament could amount to millions of dollars. Sources suggest that Tournament Director Chris Tetley has signed off, while insiders advise the 49-year-old Englishman had made this choice earlier to the tournament’s beginning.

“Many members aren’t happy with Tetley’s performance. He had tendered his resignation but it can’t be said that USA leg of the T20 World Cup has got anything to do with it,” an ICC board source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“With at least three ICC global tournaments and all associate nations getting T20I status, management work is relentless. Tetley, it is believed, had decided to quit some time back.”

Those involved closely in organizing the event believe that the ICC will profit significantly from ticket sales. However, what has upset the influential members of the ICC is the decision to select New York City as one of the venues for the prestigious event.

The condition of the pitch and outfield at Nassau County Cricket Stadium received considerable criticism, which could have been avoided.

“The event was supposed to be held in the USA and there were other cities apart from New York where matches could have been organised. Why wasn’t it considered?”

“No practice matches were played to test the strip, which was certainly unsuitable for top flight cricket,” the source said.
