Former India opener Wasim Jaffer playfully teased former England skipper Michael Vaughan after the host team defeated the defending champions in their ODI World Cup 2023 match on Sunday.
India batted first, scoring 229/9 in 50 overs, and later, pacers Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah worked together to dismiss England for 129, securing a 100-run victory.
This win placed Team India at the top of the points table with six wins in as many matches, while England is at the bottom with only one win out of six matches.
Jaffer humorously posted on X (formerly Twitter), tagging Vaughan and suggesting that England can still compete in the Champions Trophy 2025.
Jaffer’s comment referred to an ICC rule that states the top seven teams from the ongoing World Cup will automatically qualify for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, along with Pakistan as the host nation, forming an eight-team competition.
The ICC Board approved this qualification system for the 2025 Champions Trophy in 2021 when the tournament was reinstated. In the 2013 and 2017 editions of the Champions Trophy, the top eight teams in the ODI rankings were eligible to participate.
Following their victory against England, Team India’s next ODI World Cup 2023 match is against Sri Lanka on Thursday in Mumbai.
Michael Vaughan provides a remarkable response to Wasim Jaffer’s amusing birthday message
On Sunday, October 29, Michael Vaughan, the ex-England cricket captain, marked his 49th birthday. During the celebration of his special day, Vaughan received a charming and clever birthday message from his friend and occasional social media rival, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer.
Wasim Jaffer’s funny birthday message to Michael Vaughan
In his usual style, Jaffer sent another funny birthday message. He posted a picture of a yummy chocolate cake and included a screenshot of a post by Vaughan where he had claimed that England was the best white-ball team globally.
Vaughan made this claim after England’s successful second T20 World Cup win, where they beat Pakistan by five wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2022.
“England are the best white ball team in the world. They have an incredible group of players, thoroughly deserve to now hold both white ball WCs.”
”In Ben stokes they have a player who just knows how to win the big moments .. Great teams need Great individuals.. England have plenty,” read Vaughan’s post from November 2022.
“Happy b’day to the man who loves to eat his own words @MichaelVaughan #INDvsENG #CWC2023,” Jaffer captioned it while sharing.
